There is much written on the subject of wine and the following list of books is by no means exhaustive. Some of the books have been recommended to members in our Newsletter and in special offers, some have been suggested by our buyers as being particularly useful. The World Atlas of Wine

By Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson

Compiled by two of the world's most authoritative wine writers, Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson, this geographical tour of the world of wine is a fascinating read. The latest edition of this highly successful book summarises all regions of the wine making world in terms of their geography and climate - illustrating for readers the links between terroir and wine quality. Oz Clarke Pocket Wine Book

Michael Broadbent's Wine Vintages

As well as being a superlative and practical guide to wine vintages from the 1890s to today, this is an interesting read for anyone who has ever wondered why vintage conditions have such an effect on the quality (and price!) of wine.


Wine Report 2009

This insider's guide to the world of wine is one of the most up-to-date on the market. Published annually it covers the latest news and trends from across the globe. Each wine region is covered by a different expert able to report on rising stars, must-buys and the most-recent harvest.


Essential Winetasting

By Michael Schuster

An excellent starting point for those new to wine. This detailed wine tasting course starts with a guide to how to taste wine and then explores all major grape varieties, wine styles and regions. Michael Schuster, who runs his own wine school in London, guides the reader through nine practical tasting sessions and offers advice on food and wine matching, storage and serving to enable readers to enjoy their wines to the full.


Wine Grapes

By Jancis Robinson MW, Julia Harding MW and José Vouillamoz

Leading wine writer, author and broadcaster, Jancis Robinson MW, tends not to do things by halves. Her latest book, a comprehensive guide to almost 1,400 grape varieties, is ambitious by anyone's standards. Together with co-writers Julia Harding MW and botanist José Vouillamoz, it took four years to compile. 1,200 pages long, this is the most in-depth book on grapes you are ever likely to find. Beautifully illustrated and meticulously researched.

Another excellent book by the editorial team at The World of Fine Wine magazine. James Lawther MW has identified 90 producers with the finest wines and the most interesting stories to tell. Intimate portraits in an approachable style with beautiful photos by Jon Wyand. Many of our favourite suppliers are included.


Wines of Bordeaux

By David Peppercorn

A compact guide for those looking for something a little less hefty than Parker's tome. Peppercorn, one of the UK's leading authorities on Bordeaux, profiles over 1000 leading and lesser-known châteaux and provides vintage reports and quality recommendations. (NB: Revisions are not always fully updated.)


The Wines of Burgundy

By Clive Coates

Clive Coates' 2008 book updates the 1997 edition (below) but removes the excellent domaine profiles of the former. It has a good introduction and description of vineyards, and short notes on producers, which are graded by a star system, but most of the book is composed of tasting notes.


Cote D'Or: A Celebration of the Great Wines of Burgundy

This award-winning book is often referred to as the 'bible of Burgundy', not least because of the excellent domaine profiles which are sadly missing from Clive's 1997 updated edition.


Wines of Burgundy (Mitchell Beazley wine guides)

The Great Domaines of Burgundy

By Remington Norman

Third edition of an excellent book with detailed descriptions of the 'top' 141 domaines. It usefully includes some quite modestly-priced domaines, for example Prudhon in St Aubin, as well as the 'great'. A few selections not merited but generally very reliable.


Gigondas: its wines, its land, its people

By John Livingstone-Learmonth, Georges Truc, Jean-Baptiste Amadieu, Louis Barruol, Véronique Raisin, Ilka Kramer

This magnificent 500-page work includes commentary on the tasting of 50 vintages by John Livingstone-Learmonth, chapters on geology and history, as well as descriptions of every estate, with contributions from Kermit Lynch, Christophe Tassan, Alain Senderens, Alain Passard, Kelly Mc Auliffe, Ned Goodwin, Andrew Jefford, Lincoln Siliakus and Josh Raynolds. The Finest Wines of Champagne

Winner of the Louis Roederer International Wine Book Award, this is another one in the excellent series by the team at The World of Fine Wine magazine. There is an informative section on the history and background of Champagne but the main focus of the book is the producers, with over 100 profiles of both the big names and the up and coming growers. Several of our suppliers are listed.

Another book in the excellent series by the team at The World of Fine Wine magazine written by Nicolas Belfrage who also wrote our How to Buy Italy guide published on this website. The book is well-organised as well as well-written and beautifully illustrated throughout with some sumptuous photos by Jon Wyand.


The Wine and Food Lover's Guide to Portugal

4.4.1. What are 'Cookies'?

  • Most major websites use cookies.
  • A cookie is a very small data file placed on your hard drive by a web page server. It is essentially your access card, and cannot be executed as code or deliver viruses. It is uniquely yours and can only be read by the server that gave it to you.
  • Cookies cannot be used by themselves to identify you.
  • The purpose of a basic cookie is to tell the server that you returned to that web page or have items in your basket. Without cookies, websites and their servers have no memory. A cookie, like a key, enables swift passage from one place to the next.
  • Without a cookie every time you open a new web page the server where that page is stored will treat you like a completely new visitor.

4.4.2. How do Cookies help The Wine Society?

Cookies allow our website to function effectively. Cookies also help us to arrange content to match your preferred interests more quickly. We can learn what information is important to our visitors, and what isn't.

4.4.3. How does The Wine Society use cookies?

The Wine Society does not accept advertising from third parties and therefore, as a rule, does not serve third-party cookies. Exceptions to this include performance/analytical cookies (see below), used anonymously to improve the way our website works, and occasions when we may team up with suppliers to offer special discounts on goods or services.

The Society uses technology to track the patterns of behaviour of visitors to our site. In this instance we use cookies of the types described in 4.4.4.1 below (which are removed at the end of your session) and in 4.4.4.2 below (which are removed after 14 months). These are always served as first-party cookies, operated by The Wine Society, not a third party.

4.4.4. What type of cookies does The Wine Society use?

We use the following three types of cookies:

These cookies are required for the operation of our website, enabling you to move around the website and use its features, such as accessing secure areas of the website. Without these cookies, services like shopping baskets or e-billing cannot be provided. Under this heading, we currently use the following cookies:

  • Authentication Cookie and Anonymous Cookie
    These cookies remember that you are logged in to your account – without them, the website would repeatedly request your login details with each new page you visit during your time on our website. They are removed once your session has ended.
  • SessionID Cookie
    This cookie is used to remember who you are as you use our site: without it, the website would be unable to tell the difference between you and another Wine Society member and facilities such as your basket and the checkout process would therefore not be able to function. They too are removed once your session has ended.

4.4.4.2. Functionality & Targeting/Tracking Cookies
These cookies are used to recognise you when you return to our website and to provide enhanced features. This allows us to personalise our content for you. Under this heading, we currently use the following cookie:

  • Unique User Cookie
    This cookie is used to:
    • store your share number in order to identify that you have visited the website before. Without this cookie, we would be unable to tell whether you are a member or not.
    • record your visit to the website, the pages you have visited and the links you have followed. We use this information to make our website, the content displayed on it and direct marketing communications we may send to you or contact you about more relevant to your interests

This cookie expires after 14 months.

4.4.4.3. Performance/analytical cookies
These cookies collect information about how visitors use a website, for instance which pages visitors go to most often, and if they get error messages from web pages. These cookies don't collect information which identifies a visitor. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. It is only used to improve how a website works. Under this heading, we currently use the following cookies:

  • Webtrends Cookie
    This is a first-party cookie enabling Webtrends to track, anonymously, where you visit throughout the site. Using Webtrends allows The Society to better understand how members use our site and monitor website traffic.
  • Google Analytics Cookies
    These are third-party cookies similar to the above, but used to enable Google Analytics to monitor website traffic. Like the Webtrends cookie, all information is recorded anonymously.

4.4.4.4. Authentication Cookie
In order for us to ensure that your data remains secure it is necessary for us to verify that your session is authentic (i.e. it has not been compromised by a malicious user). We do this by storing an otherwise meaningless unique ID in a cookie for the duration of your visit. No personal information can be gained from this cookie.

4.4.5. How do you turn cookies off?

All modern browsers allow you to modify your cookie settings so that all cookies, or those types which are not acceptable to you, are blocked. However, please note that this may affect the successful functioning of the site, particularly if you block all cookies, including essential cookies.
