Ermita del Conde was founded in 2006 by Marta Gomendio. It is situated at high altitude, around 900m, in the small and historic village of Coruña del Conde, in the northern province of Burgos. It takes its name from a small, 12th century chapel next to the winery.
The vineyards, which are cultivated organically, are just outside the D.O. Ribera del Duero, where small plots of very old vines still exist waiting to be discovered. Marta has acquired 16has of these vines, mainly tinto fino (aka tempranillo), but also some of the very rare, indigenous white variety albillo mayor. She also controls another 7has of slightly younger wines.
Pedro Balda is Ermita Del Conde's young winemaker who comes from a family of viticulturists. His whole life has centred on vines and wine. After studying agronomy in Catalonia, he got his degree in Oenology from the University of Rioja and began a career working abroad in some of the world's most prestigious wineries, including Henschke, where he was put in charge of their first wine made from tempranillo.
