The original Vriesenhof farm, on the slopes of Stellenbosch Mountain, was bought in 1980 by Springbok rugby legend Jan Boland Coetzee to realise a dream. The property has since been expanded through acquisition and increased planting, and supplemented with leased vineyards.
In 2014 there were just over a hundred hectares planted. The style remains traditional, Jan's desire being to make wines he likes to drink, so overt fruitiness is avoided and the wines given time in bottle before release. Pinot noir and chardonnay are specialities, and the grenache – the only wine not produced from Stellenbosch vineyards – is a rising star.
