This is a first-rate example of what Australia’s Barossa Valley does best. There is power but, crucially, there is balance too. The Steading has impressive concentration of flavour and all the ingredients to set it up for more than a decade of ageing.
The wine will be delivered in early 2021
Ian Hongell’s CV makes him doubtless one of the greatest winemakers in Australia, having worked at Barossa’s flagship Peter Lehmann Winery from 1998 to 2017 where he worked with Andrew Wigan before taking over as chief winemaker. Being Barossan born and raised, Ian is perfectly suited to Torbreck, a company which truly puts the focus on this region’s unique terroir, and he achieves this through his lifelong understanding of the region. His father has been a longstanding grape grower who has supplied Torbreck for many years, and so there is harmony here on many levels.
It is not only Ian’s relationship with this winery and region which is harmonious but so are the wines that he crafts, and The Steading – a blend of grenache, mataro and shiraz – was the natural choice for our first ever Australian en primeur offering.
Torbreck The Steading Barossa 2018
Made from vines dating back to before the phylloxera outbreak of the 1880s, in around 45 different plots around the Barossa Valley, this is a first-hand demonstration of what this region does best. The complexity and depth of this wine is remarkable, striking a balance between classic class and modern execution. There is power but importantly there is balance too. The Steading has impressive concentration of flavour and all the ingredients to set it up for more than a decade of ageing. Ian Hongell’s influence on this already legendary winery has been to introduce what he feels to be a little more balance especially with regards to the alcohol. Though still a powerful wine, the 15% alcohol is unbelievably well integrated, providing body without being at all intrusive. Drink from 2022 to 2039. 15%
